Oscar-winning actor and The Godfather star Robert Duvall has died aged 95, his family have confirmed. With a career spanning seven decades, the filmmaker and actor passed away on Sunday (February 15).
Regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time, the 95-year-old was also the recipient of an Academy Award, a BAFTA, four Golden Globes, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. He was best known for roles in The Apostle, Godfather and Apocalypse Now. His last real onscreen role was in The Pale Blue Eye in 2022.Duvall was born in San Diego, California, and raised in Annapolis, Maryland. He was the son of a Navy admiral and he himself served in the U.S.
Army before his career in film. A statement shared by his wife Luciana Pedraza on social media described him as ‘one of the greatest actors of our time’ whose ‘passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters’.
The Hollywood actor, who won an Oscar for Tender Mercies, died ‘peacefully’ at his home.She penned: “Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.
“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. Duvall made his screen debut in 1963’s To Kill A Mockingbird, playing the mysterious Boo Radley before starring in a number of films including 1979’s The Great Santini, 1990’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and 2014’s The Judge alongside Robert Downey Jr.
