Trump Administration to Invest 2 Billion in Bus Projects Across 45 States

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the Trump administration will invest more than $2 billion in transportation projects across 45 states and Washington, D.C., that will support more than 2,400 buses nationwide.

According to a Thursday press release from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), an agency under the Transportation Department (DOT), the funds have been awarded to 165 projects in total and will allow cities and locales to buy new buses, construct or renovate transportation facilities, and more.

“Delivering new-and-improved bus infrastructure is yet another example of how America is building again under President Trump,” Duffy said in the release. “Whether it’s to church, school, or work, more people travel by bus than any other form of public transportation.”With these grants, thousands of new buses will hit the road and infrastructure will be upgraded—making public transit more efficient, affordable and safe for American families,” he added.

Grants have been awarded to Republican- and Democratic-led states, including New York and California. The Trump administration and Duffy have previously threatened to cut or withhold funding in several of the states that have been awarded grants.

Duffy, for example, threatened to cut approval and funding for New York City transportation projects if New York state continued to implement its congestion pricing program. He has also warned that states could lose funding for infrastructure projects if they continued to support diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

As part of the administration’s increased scrutiny of what it claims are truck drivers who are living in the country illegally, Duffy has also revoked or threatened to revoke funding to California and Pennsylvania. The Federal Highway Administration, another agency within the DOT, also ordered in October that New York City cease work on a busway project.

“Transit buses provide a vital service for millions of Americans every day,” FTA Administrator Marc Molinaro said in Thursday’s press release. “These grants will strengthen connections between communities, boost bus safety and reliability, and enhance mobility and quality of life for passengers.”
