U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly directed American forces to intensify operations against ISIS-linked terrorists accused of killing Christians in Nigeria.
Speaking during a press conference at the White House, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said Trump instructed the U.S. military to focus on protecting Christians facing attacks in Nigeria.According to Hegseth, American forces have already mobilised resources and begun operations in collaboration with Nigerian security forces.
He claimed the operation recently led to the killing of ISIS commander Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, described as a top figure allegedly responsible for attacks on Christians and threats linked to the United States.
Reports indicated that Al-Minuki, who was born in Borno State, was killed during joint operations involving U.S. forces and the Nigerian military in the North-East region earlier in May.
The commander had earlier been designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by U.S. authorities in 2023.The latest operation reportedly followed previous American military strikes against terrorist cells in Sokoto State in late 2025.
The development comes amid growing international concern over insecurity, insurgency and attacks on communities in different parts of Nigeria.
