Why we reject US threat on Nigeria — China

China has opposed the recent threat by former United States President Donald Trump to take military action against Nigeria, warning against external interference in the country’s internal affairs.Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, stated Beijing’s position in a statement posted on the ministry’s website on Tuesday.

“As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path that fits Nigeria’s national realities,” Mao said.

“We oppose any country’s interference in another country’s internal affairs under the pretext of religion or human rights. We oppose the wanton threat of sanctions and the use of force,” she added. The statement came as the Federal Government dismissed the genocide allegation, describing it as propaganda promoted by religious extremists seeking to destabilise the country.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, said the claim of genocide against Christians was “a false narrative pushed by elements intent on dividing Nigerians.”

According to him, insecurity in the country affects both Muslims and Christians, adding that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to ensuring peace and unity through dialogue and reforms. He said the government would continue to work with global partners on counterterrorism and deradicalisation efforts but would not condone foreign threats or distortions of Nigeria’s internal situation.

Trump had on Sunday also designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern,” citing alleged persecution of Christian communities — a move that has been widely criticised by diplomatic observers as politically motivated and lacking factual basis.
