Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney heads to the Indo-Pacific region this week, starting with a visit to India where he aims to accelerate efforts to deepen commercial ties with the country after years of diplomatic distress.
Carney is pushing ahead on India despite trepidation from segments of Canada’s South Asian diaspora, after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the national police force alleged that agents for the Indian government were involved in activities targeting Canadian citizens—including the 2023 murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver, British Columbia. Those allegations prompted a tit-for-tat expulsion of diplomats from both Ottawa and New Delhi.
