Emir Sanusi earns N442m from MTN as telcos firm rebounds

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, earned a total of N442 million (approximately $324,000) in remuneration from MTN Group for the 2025 financial year, reflecting the company’s improved earnings performance and continued recovery in the telecommunications sector.

The latest figure marks an increase from the N412 million he received in 2024, according to disclosures on board remuneration. The rise aligns with MTN’s stronger financial results following a period of economic and operational challenges.

Sanusi, who has served on MTN’s board since 2019 as a non-executive director, earned his income through a combination of retainer fees, board meeting allowances, and payments for participating in strategic sessions and special assignments. His role spans key committees, including risk management, finance, and social ethics, which are central to overseeing the company’s operations across multiple African markets.

Industry analysts note that such remuneration reflects both the scale of MTN’s operations and the growing importance of strong corporate governance in Africa’s telecom sector. As one of the continent’s largest telecommunications companies, MTN continues to play a critical role in digital connectivity and economic growth.

Before ascending the throne, Sanusi built a distinguished career in banking, including serving as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, where he led major reforms in the financial sector. His experience in economic policy and financial oversight is widely seen as a strategic asset to MTN’s board.

The development underscores not only MTN’s financial rebound but also the increasing value placed on experienced leadership at the board level in driving stability and growth within major corporations.
