Former South Korea Coach Hong Myung-bo Leaves for U.S. Amid Backlash After World Cup

Former South Korea national football team coach Hong Myung-bo has traveled to the United States following intense public backlash over the country’s disappointing performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Hong resigned shortly after South Korea’s group-stage elimination, taking responsibility for the team’s failure to reach the knockout stage. Upon his return home, he was met by angry fans and heavy criticism, with reports of protests, insults, and security concerns.

According to South Korean media, Hong departed for Los Angeles just days after arriving back in South Korea. Before leaving, he said he had “something to say” about the situation but would speak at a later time.

The controversy has also drawn political attention. President Lee Jae-myung ordered an official review into the national team’s World Cup failure and the circumstances surrounding its management, though this is an investigation into the football program and administration—not a criminal investigation targeting Hong personally.

The Korea Football Association is expected to conduct further reviews as the country assesses the causes of its disappointing World Cup campaign and considers the future of the national team.
