Ikeja Electric has attributed the ongoing electricity supply disruptions across parts of Lagos to gas supply constraints affecting power generation on the national grid.In a public notice issued on March 11, 2026, the company apologised to customers for the persistent outages, explaining that the situation was beyond its immediate control and linked to reduced electricity generation nationwide.
“The current situation is due to gas supply constraints affecting the national grid. This has resulted in a significant energy shortfall, necessitating increased load shedding across all our feeders,” the company said in the notice.Nigeria’s electricity supply system relies heavily on gas-fired thermal plants connected to the Transmission Company of Nigeria-managed national grid. When gas supply to these plants is disrupted or insufficient, power generation drops, forcing distribution companies to ration the limited electricity available through load shedding.
Ikeja Electric said the supply deficit had compelled it to distribute the limited power available across its network in rotation, affecting customers in its franchise area.
“We sincerely apologise for the ongoing power supply disruptions you are experiencing,” the company stated, adding that it was maintaining constant communication with relevant stakeholders to help restore normal generation levels. The firm also assured customers that efforts were ongoing within the power sector to address the gas constraints and stabilise supply.
Nigeria’s power sector has long struggled with gas supply challenges, infrastructure bottlenecks, and liquidity issues.According to data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the country’s installed electricity generation capacity is over 13,000 megawatts, but available capacity often fluctuates between 3,000 MW and 5,000 MW due to gas shortages, transmission constraints and plant maintenance issues.
Industry analysts said disruptions in gas supply to thermal plants, which account for more than 70 percent of Nigeria’s electricity generation, can quickly trigger nationwide power shortages. In recent months, several power generation companies have warned of reduced output because of inadequate gas supply and financial challenges in the sector.
Ikeja Electric reiterated that it remains committed to keeping customers informed and expressed appreciation for their patience during the period of supply instability.“We truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this challenging period,” the company said in the notice signed by its management.
