Ghana is better than Germany and Canada – Hawa Koomson

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson has rubbished claims that the cost of living in Ghana is unbearable as compared to other countries.

She said the cost of living in other countries such as Canada and Germany are higher than Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on Onua FM’s morning show, Yɛn Nsɛmpa, with Nana Yaa Brefo and JB, the Member of Parliament stated that economic hardship is a global challenge so Ghanaians should disgrace their country.

According to her, the cost of rent in Canada is higher than Ghana unlike how people are bitterly complaining in the country.

“Looking at the population in the past and now are they the same? I heard someone saying today the cost of rent in Ghana is expensive, let the person go to Canada. Last year in August when I went to Canada for a month, you paid over 2,000 Canadian dollars. It is not even a chamber and hall, one single room and small kitchen, So if the person is receiving 3, 000 dollars, how much is he going to save. If you’ve not been on someone else’s farm, you cannot say that you’re the only true farmer.” She stated.

She indicated that the cost of living is very high everywhere in the world, not only Ghana.

“Cost of living is very high everywhere, I am not saying people are not suffering, Okay, as a Member of Parliament I know what is in the system but when you compare Ghana to other countries, Ghana is doing far better. We should not wash your dirty laundry in public” Hawa Koomson indicated.

The Minister emphasised that despite the economic challenges the government of Ghana were able to pay all the public workers but other countries such the United States of America laid off some of their employees.

“Even in the US, they laid off some of their workers. You see, the strength of Canada and Ghana is not the same, we can not compare it but what Ghana did during the covid-19 time if you don’t know you will not see what it is” The Member of Parliament said.

She added that people are bathing twice in a week in Germany because of electricity.

“If you even have your money you can not buy cooking oil in Germany, you can not buy more than one bottle but in Ghana you could buy thousands of bottles at home and nobody will restrict you if you have money. Today, go to Germany, because of electricity you can not bathe yourself every day, they bathe twice in a week because there is no light and water. They have been restricted to specific times to boil water in Germany, not even Nigeria. Sometimes we don’t want to show that we travel but if you go to other countries and see what is going on you ask yourself that though there is not enough money in your country but you have your peace.” Hawa Koomson added,
