Ghanaian automobile manufacturer Kantanka Automobile has attracted attention for its locally developed electric vehicle designed for ride-hailing services such as Uber, Bolt and Yango.
The vehicle, known as the Kantanka Amoanimaa EV, was introduced as part of the company’s efforts to promote local automobile manufacturing and provide alternative transportation options for commercial drivers.
The compact electric car was unveiled during the company’s KantankaTechAt40 exhibition in December 2020, showcasing Ghana’s growing ambitions in automobile innovation and electric mobility.
The vehicle was designed with ride-hailing operators in mind, offering a smaller alternative to conventional cars used for commercial transportation.
Reports at the time indicated that the electric model was expected to cost between GH¢40,000 and GH¢50,000, although its current price and commercial availability have not been confirmed.
Kantanka Automobile, founded by the late Apostle Dr Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, has continued to explore locally assembled vehicles and clean-energy technologies.
The company’s electric vehicle initiative highlights the potential of African automobile manufacturers to contribute to the global transition towards cleaner transportation.
The development has also renewed conversations about supporting indigenous automobile manufacturers and strengthening Africa’s capacity to produce its own vehicles.
Note: The Amoanimaa EV was unveiled in 2020, so it should not be presented as a newly launched vehicle.
