The Kano State Police Command has invited Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, a candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the state House of Assembly, for questioning following the circulation of a video allegedly showing him displaying a firearm at a political gathering.

In the video circulating on social media, Warkal is seen among supporters while holding what police described as a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle. Reports said the incident occurred during a political gathering in the Janbulo area of Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State.
The police said the video was detected during routine cyber patrol. According to the command, the alleged display of the firearm, if established to be unlawful, could violate provisions of the Firearms Act and potentially cause fear, intimidation and a breach of public peace.
The Kano State Police spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said Warkal was invited to the command headquarters in Bompai on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori. He was reportedly being questioned by officers at the State Intelligence Department as investigations continued.

The police commissioner warned that the command would not tolerate lawlessness, political thuggery or the display of weapons capable of threatening public safety, regardless of the status of those involved.
The command also urged politicians, party supporters and other stakeholders to conduct their activities peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other relevant laws.
The incident has generated concern as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with authorities stressing the importance of maintaining peace and preventing weapons from becoming part of political activities.
The circumstances surrounding the firearm and whether its possession or display at the gathering was lawful remain subject to police investigation.
