Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has received a delegation from Google, led by Olumide Balogun, Director for East and West Africa, to explore how technology can improve maternal healthcare delivery across the state.

The meeting, held at Lagos House, Marina, focused on identifying opportunities to leverage technology to strengthen maternal healthcare services, address existing gaps and ensure safer pregnancies and childbirth for women across Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu said Lagos had made significant progress in reducing maternal mortality through sustained investments in healthcare facilities, skilled birth attendance and emergency medical services.
He explained that the state had also identified districts with high maternal health risks, monitored community-level healthcare challenges and strengthened referral pathways to improve access to medical attention for expectant mothers.
The governor particularly highlighted the challenges faced by pregnant women in communities where many still depend on traditional birth attendants without timely access to professional medical care.
He acknowledged that despite the progress recorded, more work was needed to ensure that every pregnant woman, regardless of her location in Lagos, could access safe and timely healthcare.
Sanwo-Olu expressed the state government’s willingness to partner with technology companies and other stakeholders to develop solutions that could identify healthcare gaps early, improve planning and strengthen maternal health services.
The proposed collaboration with Google is expected to explore how digital technology and data-driven solutions can support healthcare planning, improve service delivery and address maternal health challenges across Lagos State.
The initiative underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in strengthening healthcare systems and reducing preventable maternal deaths.
