The Lagos State Government has dismissed a report(not by The Guardian) claiming that its 2026 budget earmarked N4.2 billion for the purchase of office furniture and 30 microphones for the Office of the Deputy Governor.
According to the report, the allocation covers the purchase of 10 executive tables and chairs, 40 visitor chairs, and 120 officers’ tables and chairs for the Deputy Governor’s Office, including newly deployed principal staff and other offices. It said the allocation also includes the procurement of 30 microphones for the delegates’ conference room.
It said that N97.5 million had already been spent on similar items between January and September 2025, adding that an additional N4.247 billion has now been proposed for the 2026 fiscal year.
This was dismissed as false by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to Lagos State Governor, Wale Ajetunmobi, on X.
Ajetunmobi asked, “How can the Office of Lagos Deputy Governor budget N4.2 billion for tables, chairs and microphones when the entire capital allocation to the same office in 2026 Lagos budget is N4.2 billion?”Setting the record straight, he said the claim made by @instablog9ja is inaccurate and results from a clear misinterpretation of the approved capital provisions.
Ajetunmobi pointed out that the total capital allocation for the Office of the Deputy Governor for Y2026 is N4,247,816,006. “This figure has been incorrectly represented as an allocation solely for the purchase of office furniture and microphones,” he said.
He said that out of the total capital expenditure of the office, the sum of N4,077,816,006 is earmarked for the reconstruction of the Round House complex (this is a 6-story building facility that houses over 50 offices), including structural upgrades, retrofitting works, and the provision of alternative energy infrastructure for the building, amongst others.
He said the balance of N170,000,000 in the budgeted capital allocated covers the purchase of office equipment, office furniture and fittings, and other capital items.
