Nigeria Unveil Robotic Surgery Academy In Ogun State

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to human capital development under the Renewed Hope Agenda with the launch of the Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV) RoboMed Robotics Academy in Ogun State.

Dr. Alausa said the initiative would expand access to advanced specialist training within Nigeria, strengthen local expertise and enable Nigerian surgeons to acquire emerging surgical skills without leaving the country.

He noted that a stronger education system must equip professionals with knowledge, practical skills and technological competence required to meet evolving national needs.

The Minister noted that over N250 billion had been invested in medical education to strengthen medical institutions, including provision of simulation laboratories and rehabilitation of facilities across more than 24 medical schools.

Dr. Alausa stressed that government investment must be complemented by private sector participation and diaspora expertise, and urged stronger partnerships among universities, teaching hospitals and private organisations to promote practical learning, joint research and exposure to emerging techniques.

He highlighted the Ministry’s BRIDGE programme – Bridging Research, Innovation, Development and Global Engagement – being implemented with TETFund to enable Nigerian professionals abroad to contribute through teaching, research and mentorship, and called on diaspora professionals to register on the BRIDGE portal.

The Minister urged the Academy to work with the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and relevant professional bodies to develop structured training pathways, emphasizing that patient safety, clinical competence and ethical responsibility must remain central to adoption of robotic-assisted surgery.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of Redeemer’s Health Village, Dr. Adedamola Dada, said the Academy represents major investment in medical technology and workforce development, building capacity in robotics, artificial intelligence, automation and biomedical engineering.

The event featured presentations on training pathways, the signing of a training Memorandum of Understanding involving the Health Village, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Redeemer’s University and RoboMed Global, as well as a tour of facilities and a simulation demonstration of robotic and telesurgery.
