Nigerian students build AI tools to tackle education challenges

Nigerian developers have created AI solutions to address challenges in education, showcased at an event by Andela, OpenAI, and Miva Open University in Lagos.

The initiative brought together 100 developers from Miva Open University and 100 senior engineers from Andela to explore how AI could be applied to learning and education.

According to the statement on Thursday, the 100 Miva developers were trained in OpenAI Codex before collaborating with the senior Andela engineers in a three-week development programme to create solutions for education and lifelong learning.

One of the projects showcased was “Coteacher,” developed by Miva student Esih Egwurube, which emerged first at the event.

The statement read, “The platform gives students a second chance at classroom lessons by turning a single teacher recording into personalised versions based on each learner’s needs and learning history.

“With teacher approval, students can download lessons for offline access, get alternative explanations or activities when they’re stuck, and pick up where they left off. Egwurube said the training afforded him both technical learning as well as experience to tackle challenges and create real-world solutions with measurable impact.

Vice President, Africa, Middle East & Impact Partnerships at Andela, Kate Woska expressed gladness that the developers came up with tangible solutions applicable to resolve real-life problems.Woska said,

“This is what effective AI adoption looks like: developers building proficiency through applied learning and then putting those capabilities to work on real problems.“By combining OpenAI Codex with the experience and guidance of Andela’s senior engineers, we’re helping developers move beyond experimentation to build tangible solutions. It’s the same connection between AI adoption and delivery that we help enterprises make. ”

The statement highlighted that a broader cohort of 200 senior developers recorded a 36-percentage-point improvement in assessed proficiency over their baseline after the two weeks of applied learning.

The initiative formed part of the Codex Champions Series, a pan-African programme showcasing how developers can use AI coding tools to create practical solutions. Lagos hosted the second chapter of the series, following an earlier edition in Nairobi, while Cape Town is scheduled to host the next event on November 15.
