Peter Obi, ex-Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, visited the Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital, Nkpor, on Friday, presenting a ₦10 million donation to support the facility’s growth and improvement in service delivery.
During his visit, Obi interacted with hospital staff and patients, observing firsthand the dedication of healthcare workers. He described missionary hospitals as critical pillars of the nation’s health system.
“They provide a significant share of healthcare services in Nigeria, particularly in underserved communities where government presence is limited,” Obi said.
He emphasized the unique strengths of voluntary health institutions, noting that they are “known for prudent management of resources, transparency, and a deep sense of mission in serving the public selflessly.” Obi added that supporting such institutions is not only an act of generosity but a strategic investment in the nation’s wellbeing.
The former governor urged both government and citizens to strengthen collaboration with faith-based and voluntary healthcare providers.
“Sustained collaboration between government and voluntary providers remains essential to improving health outcomes and expanding coverage to vulnerable populations,” he said.
Addressing the hospital staff directly, Obi encouraged them “to remain steadfast in their noble mission of delivering professional, compassionate, and high-quality care to society,” praising their role in complementing government efforts to provide accessible and affordable healthcare.
Obi reiterated his commitment to supporting missionary healthcare, highlighting its importance in building a healthier society.
“These institutions continue to fill critical gaps in our health system and have demonstrated capacity for effective and efficient management of healthcare services where they are most needed,” he said.
He concluded on a hopeful note: “A new Nigeria is possible, and it starts with investing in institutions that serve the people faithfully and effectively.”
