Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has reacted to a recent United Nations warning about worsening food insecurity in Northern Nigeria, describing the situation as a consequence of poor leadership and years of inadequate governance.
Obi said the warning should serve as a wake-up call for authorities at all levels to address the root causes of hunger, insecurity, and poverty affecting millions of people across the region.
According to him, the growing humanitarian crisis underscores the need for policies that prioritize food production, security, and economic development.
He stressed that Nigeria has the human and natural resources to feed its population but argued that poor planning, insecurity, and ineffective leadership have continued to undermine agricultural productivity and livelihoods.
Obi called on the federal and state governments to take urgent, coordinated action to improve security, support farmers, expand agricultural investment, and implement sustainable measures that will prevent the food situation from deteriorating further. He added that addressing the crisis requires responsible leadership and a commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerians.
