Peter Obi Declares 2027 Presidential Bid, Pledges One-Term Tenure

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has declared his intention to run in the 2027 presidential election, with a pledge to serve only one term if elected and to restore Nigeria’s stability within his first two years in office.

Obi made this known on Sunday during a live X Space session with his supporters. He used the platform to dismiss claims of a potential joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stressing that his focus is on issues affecting Nigerians, not political alliances.

“If the coalition is not about stopping the killings in Benue and Zamfara, reviving our economy, boosting industrial productivity, and putting food on people’s tables, count me out,” Obi declared. “Nigeria is at war, and we must act fast.”

In a statement released Monday by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), the former Anambra State governor emphasized unity, effective governance, and purposeful leadership.

“I will bring stability to Nigeria within two years in office. Leaders must remain in the country to fix the country,” he added.

Obi reaffirmed his support for zoning, saying, “I believe in power rotation between the North and South. I implemented it during my time as governor of Anambra State.”

On the ongoing leadership tussle within the Labour Party, Obi said efforts were being made to secure INEC’s recognition of the Nenadi Usman-led faction, in line with a Supreme Court ruling.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, he said: “We will take a different approach — peaceful and democratic. Our votes must count and will count. No more business as usual.”

He also outlined his priorities for his first 100 days in office, including improving security, enhancing education, eradicating poverty, cutting governance costs, and tackling corruption.“My family will not be involved in any corrupt dealings. Public funds will be channelled strictly into critical sectors,” he assured.

Obi also vowed to protect democratic principles. “There will be a vibrant opposition. Under my leadership, elected officials will not be jumping from one party to another,” he said.

Criticising the current state of governance, he stated: “Imagine people are being killed in Benue and Borno, yet our leaders are busy commissioning bus stops and holidaying abroad.”
