Super Eagles Miss Out on 2026 World Cup as FIFA Confirms DR Congo’s Play-Off Spot

Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the final list of countries qualified for the intercontinental play-offs was released by football’s global governing body, FIFA.

The updated list confirms that the Democratic Republic of Congo has secured its place in the intercontinental play-off tournament, extinguishing any lingering hopes that Nigeria might still find a pathway back into contention for a World Cup berth.

The development follows a dispute involving the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association over the alleged ineligibility of a Congolese player during the qualification process. The NFF had filed a formal petition, seeking to overturn the outcome and potentially reopen Nigeria’s chances of advancing to the play-offs.

However, sources familiar with the matter revealed that FIFA reached a conclusive decision on Monday, 17 February, and officially communicated its verdict to all parties involved. The ruling upheld DR Congo’s position, effectively closing the door on Nigeria’s appeal.

With this confirmation, the Super Eagles’ hopes of returning to the global stage through the intercontinental route have now been dashed. The outcome marks another major setback for Nigerian football, as fans across the country had held onto slim expectations that administrative intervention could revive the team’s qualification prospects.

The intercontinental play-off serves as a final opportunity for select teams from different confederations to compete for remaining World Cup slots. Nigeria’s absence from that stage means the country will not participate in the expanded 2026 tournament, a competition that will feature more teams than previous editions.

For Nigerian supporters, the decision brings clarity but also disappointment, as attention now shifts toward rebuilding and preparing for future international competitions
