Nigeria is owed approximately N17.45 billion by Togo, Benin Republic, and Niger Republic for electricity supplied during the first quarter of 2026.
The outstanding debt was disclosed in the latest industry report, which showed that the three neighbouring countries are yet to fully settle payments for electricity exported from Nigeria under existing cross-border power supply agreements.
Nigeria supplies electricity to several West African countries through approved bilateral contracts aimed at strengthening regional energy cooperation.
While the arrangements are expected to benefit all parties, delays in payment have continued to raise concerns about the financial sustainability of the country’s power sector.
Industry stakeholders say prompt payment of outstanding debts is essential to improve liquidity in Nigeria’s electricity market, ensure power generation companies receive adequate funding, and support continued investment in electricity infrastructure.
Authorities are expected to engage with the affected countries to facilitate the settlement of the outstanding obligations while maintaining regional cooperation in the power sector.
