Tragedy struck the Kings Park Football Club on Friday with the death of one of its players, Saburi Adeniji, fondly called “Ola,” after complications arising from a serious brain stem injury.
The club confirmed the loss in a statement, describing Adeniji as a valued member of the team whose passing has left players, officials and supporters in deep sorrow. He was the club’s number 17 and was widely admired for his dedication on and off the pitch.
Prior to his death, Adeniji had been placed on intensive medical care at Queen’s Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit on January 15, 2026.Medical updates from the hospital indicated that his condition worsened over time, leading doctors to medically certify him as brain dead.
Hospital authorities reportedly explained that recent changes in medical procedures delayed the withdrawal of life support, as further statutory tests were required. This delay, however, created an opportunity for his family to be contacted and arrangements made for them to travel to the United Kingdom. Family games
At the time of his hospitalisation, Adeniji’s wife and four-year-old daughter were in Nigeria. The hospital was said to have issued an urgent appeal to enable his wife to travel on compassionate grounds so she could see her husband before his death.
Sadly, despite these efforts, she and their child arrived a day after he passed away. In response to the family’s urgent needs, friends and supporters launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover visa processing, flight tickets, accommodation and other related expenses, citing the time-sensitive nature of the situation.
Paying tribute, Kings Park FC said Adeniji was more than a footballer, describing him as a friend, teammate, husband and father whose impact would never be forgotten. The club announced that its scheduled match against The Castlemen had been postponed as a mark of respect, with football activities expected to resume on February 21.
Messages of condolence have continued to pour in from across the football community, with many recalling Adeniji’s character, resilience and love for the game. The club assured supporters that it remains united in supporting the bereaved family during this difficult time.
