UNIVERSITY OF BUENOS AIRES TO AWARD LIONEL MESSI HONORARY DOCTORATE FOR CAREER AND IMPACT ON ARGENTINA

Lionel Messi is set to receive one of the highest honours in Argentina outside the world of football, with the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) naming him a Doctor Honoris Causa, its highest honorary distinction.

The university’s Superior Council unanimously approved the recognition, citing Messi’s extraordinary sporting career, his perseverance, humility and ethical conduct, as well as his commitment to representing Argentina on the international stage.

UBA highlighted Messi’s contribution to Argentina’s major international successes, including the 2021 Copa América, 2022 Finalissima, 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Copa América. The university also recognised his broader influence as an ambassador of Argentine culture and national identity.

The honour is scheduled to be formally presented to Messi on October 6, 2026, before Argentina’s farewell match against Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. The occasion is expected to form part of tributes surrounding Messi’s final appearance for the national team.

UBA said the distinction goes beyond Messi’s records and trophies, recognising the values he has demonstrated throughout his career and his influence both on and off the football pitch.

The honorary doctorate is an honorary title rather than an academic qualification earned through university study. It places Messi among distinguished figures from different fields who have been recognised for exceptional contributions to Argentine society and beyond.

The university’s decision adds another remarkable achievement to the career of the Argentina captain, whose influence has extended from football to becoming one of the country’s most recognisable global symbols.
