Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has paid glowing tribute to Nigerian nurses and midwives in celebration of the 2026 World Nurses Day, describing them as the “heart of the nation’s health sector.”
In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi praised nurses across the country for their compassion, sacrifice, and resilience despite the harsh realities facing Nigeria’s healthcare system.
According to him, Nigerian nurses continue to work under difficult conditions ranging from physical and mental stress to poor working environments, inadequate equipment, and high patient-to-nurse ratios, yet remain committed to saving lives with dignity and courage.
Obi noted that over the years, he has supported several schools and colleges of nursing and midwifery across the country because of the vital role nurses play in healthcare delivery and national development. He also applauded Nigerian nurses making waves internationally, stating that many have distinguished themselves globally through groundbreaking nursing research and excellence in clinical practice.
The former presidential candidate assured nurses that a “New Nigeria” would prioritize their welfare, education, and professional development to ensure they remain globally competitive. Your compassion, sacrifice, and resilience keep our nation alive,” Obi stated while urging nurses not to relent in their service to humanity.
He concluded the message by wishing all Nigerian nurses and midwives a happy World Nurses Day, reiterating his popular slogan: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
