The world’s oldest living woman, Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas, has passed away at the age of 116 in Brazil.
Her death occurred on April 30, 2025, according to an announcement by the Teresian Sisters of Brazil, the Catholic congregation to which she belonged. The religious community praised her lifelong commitment and devotion, describing her as a woman of deep faith and unwavering service.
Born on June 8, 1908, Lucas became the world’s oldest person following the death of Tomiko Itooka of Japan, who also passed at the age of 116.
Reacting to questions about her long life, Sister Inah once said, “God is the secret of life. He is the secret of everything,” highlighting her deep spiritual conviction as the foundation of her longevity.
Lucas marked her 110th birthday with a special audience with Pope Francis, a moment cherished by the congregation and remembered as a symbol of her impactful life.
With her passing, 114-year-old Ethel Caterham from the United Kingdom is now recognised as the oldest living person in the world.
